Chetan Bhagat is a popular name in the field of novels these days, at least for young readers not because his novels are in the best selling list but his target or readers as youths and topics they are related with, from relationship to hangouts and from college studies to romantic events. His latest venture “Revolution 2020” also revolves around the growth, career and settlement of professions of three friends, a girl and two boys showing the double relationship the girl had with her two boyfriends at a time.
The story of Gopal started from his childhood days. He narrated first his primary school life and his first meeting of Aarti who had hated him at first for eating half chocolate cake of her tiffin and the teacher had took Gopal out of the class with insult for stealing. Later they became friends after Gopal apologized. Gopal, Aarti and Raghav were good friends. Aarti and Gopal were closer. They spent nearly 7 years and in between this time span they had known almost everything of each other. Aarti was friend with Raghav since he was Gopal’s friend. Gopal hailed from a working class family, mother dead and father in his early sixties coughing most of the time and visiting doctors regularly.
Aarti was from wealthy family and had government facilities and even security as her grandfather was chief minister before. All the friends passed their higher secondary level. In India most of the parents want their child to become an engineer. This is also showed in the novel. Gopal and Raghav prepared for enrolment in engineering so joined preparation classes. Raghav passed whereas Gopal failed. Gopal’s baba turned crazy to even take loan to make his son an engineer. Gopal went to Kota for preparation once again for his father.
The relation between Aarti and Raghav stretched due to physical distance. Gopal called her from STD booth sometimes and later knew that Aarti and Raghav had become closer enough to be girlfriend and boyfriend. Gopal cursed Raghav for snatching his beloved. One thing was strange, Aarti missed and cared Gopal but she did not want to be in relation and although she knew that Gopal loved her, she went for Raghav. From Kota, Gopal thought deep and shouted at Aarti and said that she chose Raghav as he was becoming engineer and he was a mere loser.
Again he failed the second attempt in spite of his hard labour. His father died later due to hypertension one day and he turned into a young orphan. His uncle had grabbed his father’s thirty acres land which was nearly missed but to his luck his friend Sunil took to Mr. Shukla ji who promised to settle his problem taking half of the land and helping him financially to build up an engineering college in Vanarasi where director would be Mr. Gopal.
Although Raghav passed and earned engineering degree, he did not get into job of that field but later entered in journalism, run a paper called Revolution 2020 with a motto to change India, traditional Indian society and overthrow corruption from nation. Later he wrote against Shukla ji who was at power that defeated his image in the city and media pressure was unbearable. The Gangatech engineering college was built and run with Shukla ji in board members or a trustee. There grew cold relation between Raghav and Gopal since Raghav disturbed Gopal’s support, Mr. Shukla ji. Raghav had blamed Shukla was in a corruption scam and the college was build with the corrupt money.
Aarti and Gopal met many times. They became physically close with each other but Aarti was in dilemma about whom to choose but she gave her words to Gopal. Shukla was sentenced to prison as he was accused of misusing state money on corruption charges. Gopal promised Aarti with her consent to say everything with Raghav and marry her soon. Later the MLA election came. Raghav had turned poor and shabby as he was tortured and his office “Revolution 2020” was immensely vandalized by shukla men. On Gopal’s birthday, Aarti saw Gopal naked with call girls on his bed and turned away getting shocked and never to be consoled.
This time Gopal did not try to settle. He thought to resettle relation between Aarti and Raghav that had deteriorated. He knew Raghav had intense desire to change the society and make corruption free. He arranged everything to make him MLA by employing him back to ‘Dainik’ and paving the way for marriage between Aarti and Raghav so that Raghav can be sure-to-win candidate for MLA elections for general people wanted Aarti’s father Mr. Pradhan to stand. He could have become MLA himself but he thought Raghav was the most suitable and effective person for reforming corrupted bureaucracy.
Bhagat has good qualities to provide fun to his readers, making hundreds of scenes and events that even visualizes like a film watching at. I smell a rat if he wants this book to be made a successful hit in Bollywood. This novel can also be criticized as a script for a film. Whatever may be, he has used communicative language and showed veracity within the young people. He has also become successful to arouse feelings of self within his young readers making scenes and events that imply to youths.
