Humanities: A faculty is Disuse?
I like humanities and have been studying same. It’s a passion and desire for me from within to study literature and theories. I was not a poor student at my school level and neither I was in difficulty at any time. People often ask me why I took humanities as its scope is not big and in Nepal they say it’s worthless to choose humanities. Some even discourage telling I could only be a teacher and there is no value of teacher in today’s world. I am fed up of explaining people the reason I chose it. I find lots of scope in humanities. The problem is lack of prompt and direct implementation in any sectors. Its application is seen only when it is implemented which is yet to be done and people like me are waiting for the day hopefully.
You can be a good writer studying humanities. Humanities can create a charismatic leader, a tactful orator, a talented psychoanalyst, an able administrator, sociologist, and mathematician and so on. Our teachers have also forgotten their studies. They also do not convince their students to read humanities instead they praise to those who choose science and engineering. Parents are not liable on this matter as they are ready to spend lots of money no matter of taking loan from bank, are in a dream of making their sons and daughters doctors and engineers. I don’t say it’s only the fault of teachers and parents, the educational system of Nepal has also played key role. Department of humanities and social sciences do not bring new syllabus and concepts of learning. Application of knowledge is zero. Instead their teaching style is traditional and only for teaching sake. New subjects are not prioritized.
People should remove the fallacy that humanities are taken only by weak, undetermined, aimless students rather should be encouraged. A fine painter and a renowned writer are the products of humanities. I don’t mean that to be a writer or a painter you must read humanities but I mean it helps to mould your artistic energy and gives you a shape. Chetan Bhagat, an IT expert is a popular writer but, will his books really able to remain in the history for so long? It is a question that you should take it very seriously. Hence time has come for all the students to fill the gap of studying humanities in order to fill the lacking areas of administration, politics, linguistics, archaeology, anthropology, geography, economics, history, psychology.
Humanities is one of the most underrated streams of all. It is a common myth, well circulated among the Nepali psyche, that the Arts/Humanities streams is for students who are “not smart enough” for studying either Science or Commerce. But the fact is not so. There are many brilliant and smart students in humanities and I myself have not found most of the students well in science. Many science students are reading only in pressure or for their parents. This is also what I call, the brain drain. People often ask what humanities is. They ask not in order to know what it really is but in a way of taking it very lightly as if only English and Nepali are subjects there. Humanities is an academic discipline which deals with the study of the ‘Human Condition’, utilizing methodologies that are usually analytical, critical or speculative. The Humanities are a wide field of study, with extremely interesting and mind-stimulating career options galore. Humanities is a stream for students who have a genuine interest to know more about the human society, ideologies, beliefs and how the humanity expresses itself in terms of art, architecture, religions, etc
Some friends and brothers ask me whether they can choose both humanities and business administration together in their graduate level. From this question I derive a certain sense of “nothing-ism” they take for humanities. I thought they think that it’s too easy to read and both can be pulled together. And I replied to the same who questioned that, “If you are too interested you can take humanities in BA”. He again replied, “Arts and literature is my hobby and I think studying BBA is more sensible than BA”. I got anxious again and did not say anything to him. He (students) should know that humanities consists of different theories, philosophies, and analytical texts that are not so easy as they think instead they are knowledgeable and helpful in understanding the day to day life and makes us complete humane.
There have been much research and exploration into unconscious matters by Science. Time has come now to research on man himself and his mind. Humanities studies help in achieving the knowledge on man and his mind and behavioral traits.
