Drama or Movie?

WHETHER it is more beneficial to watch a movie or a live stage drama can be a matter of debate. As I am a student of literature and drama, I would prefer going to a drama than a commercial movie. Films can fascinate more people it’s true, but the intensity of watching a live play by students and drama lovers is no less enthusiastic. I watch stage dramas not only to understand my course drama text, but also to acquire the numerous benefits they give.

Primarily, I go there to get relief from emotional tension. I study in the morning and teach in school in the daytime. Juggling work and study is daunting for me at times. I manage my time to watch stage dramas. Another reason I like stage performances is the development of social skills. When you watch dramas, there are certain casts and roles. It gives the experience of looking at life from different angles. I get an opportunity to meet famous people as every time I go to a drama, I talk with artists, professors and writers. The scope of stage dramas in Kathmandu is widening. New artists and organisations are coming forward, which is really an appreciable task.

Watching and acting in stage dramas teaches expressive language. In drama, the characters are given certain roles. They choose words that express their perspective and even experiment with new words. Some of my friends say watching dramas is a waste of time, and a few of them say some shows are entertaining. What I want to tell those people is that real acting is found in stage dramas. They are used to watching films in theatres and shouting in mirth just looking at the animation and its charming display.

Dramas are not only a means of entertainment but a means of gaining knowledge of the culture and lifestyle of different people and places. Watching dramas influences our lives as we can distinguish between good and bad, and also right and wrong. And if you are willing to act in dramas, that will benefit you more. Your interpersonal skills will develop, and you will gain more confidence and be able to speak easily on common issues.

In today’s world where technology and animation rule the theatrical world, live stage dramas are discouraged. Badly written and acted films are often compensated by great special effects. However, badly acted plays are almost never given positive reviews. Whether you prefer films or live theatre is a matter of personal taste, but what you should not forget is that drama is the foundation of movies and a better way of identifying our lifestyle and culture.
